In honor of Mental Health Month, a new art exhibit featuring the work of local artists will be on display in a free gallery display throughout the month of May.

“Psyche Relics” features 2D and 3D artwork by Columbus-based artist Kimberly Rose Free depicting her journey through psychiatric treatment over the past 30 years. Her work will be on display during gallery business hours at the 411 Gallery, 411 Sixth St. in downtown Columbus, from May 1 to May 24. An artist reception will be held on Thursday, May 2nd from 5-7 p.m. The gallery is open from noon to 5 p.m. Thursday and Friday from 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

This exhibit is presented in partnership with the Columbus Regional Arts Council and Mental Health Matters. It contains drawings that express 30 years of lived experience with severe mental illness, many of which explore the ever-present invisibility through conceptual drawings and sculptures using found paper and objects. revealed and documented.

“Through vulnerable yet playful introspection, the artist seeks to involve the viewer in a search for emotional well-being,” reads the exhibition announcement. “Beneath everyone’s public persona is their true self, and we are all on a journey towards it. This series was created as artists sought to create meaning from their own journeys. , her two-dimensional and three-dimensional works are the result of over 30 years of psychiatric treatment. They reveal the invisible experiences of mental health treatment. seeks to express healing from dark pain toward tranquility. Aspects of therapy such as journaling, individual and group therapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and medication trials are explored with gratitude and humor.

I live and work freely in Columbus. She draws and paints her own inner and outer reality for a daily practice of creative mindfulness and recovery from chronic pain and depression. She uses paper and drawings, and her goal is to keep things simple. She holds a bachelor’s degree in visual arts and education and has exhibited her work locally.

411 Gallery is a community art gallery and cultural space for exhibitions, events, and collaboration. Managed by the Columbus Regional Arts Council, 411 Gallery is located in downtown Columbus’ Sixth Street Arts Alley, a creative hub in the city’s heart.

The Columbus Area Arts Council is a nonprofit organization that enriches the community through arts projects and programs, including exhibitions, events, local artist development initiatives, and grants for artists and organizations.

Mental Health Matters, Bartholomew Co. Initiative is a community-wide effort created to address challenges and improve mental health systems for the well-being of Bartholomew County’s youth and adults.
