Over the past few years, you may have been looking for ways to feel better and improve your mental health. Meditation teaches you to be aware and pay attention to what’s going on in your mind and body, helping you to be more present. It also helps you develop a better sense of self. “One of his biggest benefits for his students is confidence,” says Joy Page, owner of wellness studio Joy of Yoga. “Meditation encourages us to slow down and become more aware. It teaches us to examine our thoughts and feelings without judgment.” There are distractions in life. It can be difficult to quiet your mind when there’s so much going on, but there are some groups that can help you understand the benefits of mindfulness.

Confluence Zen Center STL

7112 St. James Square

In short: For nearly 30 years, Lume University has studied meditation under the guidance of Japan’s influential Zen masters. Since 2015, Lume, a Zen master himself, has been guiding St. Louisans toward mindfulness at Confluence Zen Center STL, which recently moved to a new location in Maplewood.

class: Confluence Zen Center STL offers seated meditation sessions, also known as zazen, throughout the week. Those new to Zen training are encouraged to attend Beginner’s Night, which is usually held on the first Monday of each month.

joy of yoga

8918 Manchester

In short: Page opened this Brentwood studio as a home for guests seeking mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Joy of Yoga offers a variety of classes and workshops for yogis of all experience levels.

class: Although the emphasis is on yoga, including vinyasa, yoga nidra, and hatha classes on the basics of yoga, there are also some opportunities to practice meditation. The studio also hosts events focused on guided meditation.

float STL

3027 Locust St. in Midtown / 127 B Weldon Parkway in Maryland Heights

In short: As the name suggests, floating exercises are a way to relieve anxiety and treat mild pain. Climb aboard a pod filled with warm water and Epsom salts and relax in peace and quiet, and in complete darkness if you wish, while you float for 60 to 90 minutes.

class: There are no information sessions, but at both the Midtown and Maryland Heights locations, there’s more to it than just floating on the water. Infrared sauna sessions last 30 minutes and promise all the relaxing benefits of a traditional sauna at a more comfortable temperature.

Jane’s House Studio

1112 First Capitol, Suite C, St. Charles

In short: Robin Buck founded Jane’s House 20 years ago to share the philosophical teachings of yoga and promote a holistic lifestyle. Named in honor of former St. Charles County Librarian Jane Householder, the studio offers sessions in meditation, yoga, Reiki, and more.

class: Sign up for a 75-minute movement and meditation class on Mondays at 7 p.m. This is an ideal yoga class for those who want to spend more time meditating.

Deman’s yoga

6348 South Roseberry

In short: This Clayton studio promotes a heightened sense of self through yoga and meditation. Founder Christy Lin, originally from Taiwan, has taught students around the world the balance between physical fitness and peace of mind.

class: Guided meditation sessions are held regularly, including deep stretching and meditation classes on Tuesday nights. Please check the studio schedule for the latest information.
