At any moment, two swarms of billions of periodic cicadas will emerge from the earth at the same time. This is an event that only happens once every 221 years.

At Louisiana, we are always finding creative solutions to problems. So why not find a solution to the coming swarms of billions of cicadas?

When life gives us billions of cicadas, we make dinner.

In the United States, periodic cicadas are classified as nestlings based on the year they emerge.

Both the 17-year cicada and the 13-year cicada are numbered and each identified with Roman numerals. These chicks occur in different years and locations, with some overlap in some areas of the United States.

Nymphs begin to emerge, usually in late spring to early summer, when the soil temperature about 8 inches below the ground reaches about 64°F.

Then, they shed their skin for the final time.

At any moment, two massive swarms of cicadas will emerge from the ground in a double emergence event that hasn’t happened in over 200 years. There will be billions, maybe even trillions of insects flying around. ”
