- Americans eat more than 2 billion grilled cheese sandwiches each year.
- With the availability of sliced bread and processed cheese slices came grilled cheese.
- But you can make simple dishes even more delicious by adding other ingredients or using a food processor or air fryer.
When it comes to comfort food, nothing beats a grilled cheese sandwich.
And today, April 12th, we also have a special day to celebrate this popular dish: National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day.
It’s the perfect time to step out of your comfort zone. You can turn your own grilled cheese into an even more satisfying dining experience.
Sure, Americans love grilled cheese sandwiches just the way they are. About 2.3 billion were consumed in the 12 months ending in September 2022, according to market research firm NPD Group’s National Eating Trends and CREST foodservice tracking service.
Most of them (more than 2.1 billion) were prepared and eaten at home, so there is plenty of room for experimentation in the kitchen. Another 160 million were ordered by restaurants and food service establishments, NPD said.
National Grilled Cheese Day: A History of the Sandwich
According to HowStuffWorks.com, the recipe for what is now called the modern grilled cheese sandwich began after JL Kraft & Brothers (later to become Kraft Foods) began making processed cheese after 1914. Next came sliced Wonder Bread, which his Continental Baking Company began distributing in 1930, according to History.com.
During World War II, Navy cooks “baked hundreds of ‘American cheese sandwiches’ in ship galleys,” following government-issued cookbooks, Food Timeline reports.
These were usually served as open sandwiches. But since Kraft started selling Kraft Singles, which are individually wrapped processed cheese slices, cooks have started adding a second piece of bread on top, HowStuffWorks.com says.
“This dish will always remain a classic. It’s a childhood classic for most people because it’s incredibly comforting and almost every culture has their own interpretation of this combination.” Top Chef Eden Grinspan, Canadian host and author of Eating Out Loud: Bold Middle, told USA TODAY that she can enjoy oriental flavors all day every day. “Melting cheese and bread. Simple perfection.”

What’s so special about a grilled cheese sandwich?Traditional food made with love
For many people, a grilled cheese sandwich is a dish they remember from childhood, when their parents or grandparents often served them a melt-in-the-mouth delicious sandwich with soup (usually tomato).
“This is comfort food. It’s a simple meal,” said celebrity chef Carla Hall. “But if it’s not made with love, the results can be just as dire, such as the bread not laying out properly or the bread getting burnt and the cheese getting cold.”
But as adults, we may want something “more interesting,” Hall says.
Changes can be as simple as using a different type of cheese or preparing the bread differently before placing it in the pan. You can also radically level up your grilled cheese game by adding new ingredients or grilling your sandwiches in entirely new ways.
What’s the easiest way to improve grilled cheese?
If you always put butter in the pot, try something different. Brush the outside of both breads evenly with butter before placing them in the pan, making sure to cover them evenly.
What’s the best way to coat bread evenly? At America’s Test Kitchen, brush melted butter over the slices.
Another approach, Hall says, is to spread mayonnaise, made from oil and eggs, on top of the bread, which helps it bake more evenly. “Mayonnaise doesn’t burn, and you can control the temperature of the grilled cheese better.” And it could be even tastier, Hall says. That’s because mayonnaise has “flavor, sourness, and saltiness,” he said.

You can also try using butter or mayonnaise. Bon Appétit’s recipe, titled “The Best Grilled Cheese Ever,” suggests adding melted butter to the skillet and spreading mayonnaise on the outside of the sandwich. “When mayonnaise bread meets buttered bread, the magic really begins,” writes senior food editor Alison Roman.
A hunger-inducing scene in the 2014 film “Chef” offers another delicious strategy. Jon Favreau wrote, directed, produced and stars as chef Karl Casper, who makes grilled cheese for his son. He butters both loaves, pours olive oil into the skillet, places each loaf, butter side down, on top of the oil and slides it down to mix the oil and butter.
Then place a slice of cheddar cheese and shavings of other cheese, such as Gruyère or Parmesan, on top of each bread. As the cheese begins to melt, he lifts the slice to see how brown it is. Once it looks good, flip one half of the sandwich over the other half. (I tried this recipe and can attest to its quality.)
Why not try it yourself? On Netflix, you can watch Favreau and “Chef” co-creator Chef Roy Choi recreate the process on “The Chef Show,” Season 1, Episode 1.
What bread goes well with grilled cheese?
White bread is a classic choice. However, there are many types of white bread. According to Bakerpedia, many recipes involving Bon Appétit products mention Pullman bread, which is a four-square loaf.
Would you like to try other breads? country white, hearty wheat, oatmeal, or Hall’s favorite, pumpernickel. “I love it toasted and crunchy,” she said.
Grynspan adds, “I use fluffy breads like fresh sourdough, challah, or my personal favorite, fluffy pita.” Her book Eating Out Loud: Bold Middle Eastern Flavors for All Day Every Day includes a recipe for stuffing buttered pita with a mixture of gouda, sesame seeds, and nigella seeds.

Grynszpan said she and her husband, Ido, “have really fond childhood memories of eating cheesy toast in Israel.” “Here, I tweaked it a little by adding a little bit of nigella and sesame seeds, and finished it off with a little honey for a sweet-salty taste. But I want to throw that all away and just have cheese on my pita bread. If you think so, no one will. They’ll be mad at grilled cheese.”
Well, how about cheese?
Finally, we get to the cheese. The classic choice here is American cheese. Food Network’s Classic American Grilled Cheese includes one slice of his white and one yellow American cheese.
If you want to go further from there, America’s Test Kitchen recommends 3 ounces of mild cheddar or a combination of cheeses, including sharper cheddar and Monterey Jack. These can also be grated and mixed.
Don’t want to shred your cheese? Chase Brightwell, associate editor of America’s Test Kitchen Reviews, suggests using a Y-shaped vegetable peeler.
How to keep grilled cheese sandwiches from burning
Try cooking your grilled cheese over low to medium heat, low heat, and medium heat.
“As for when to flip the sandwich, the longer you wait, the firmer and crispier the outside will be. Low to medium-low heat is preferable,” says America’s Test Kitchen Recipe. is advising.
How to use a grilled cheese food processor with air fryer
In Cook’s Illustrated, a magazine published by America’s Test Kitchen, the recipe “Grilled Cheese for Adults” uses a food processor to combine robiola cheese (up to 1 year old), brie cheese, dry white wine, and chipotle. Masu. Add the adobo sauce to a food processor and make a paste.
Spread it on oatmeal sandwich bread, slather the outside bread slices with a mixture of unsalted butter and Dijon mustard and cook.

Many of the grilled cheese sandwich recipes in Hall’s book Cooking With Love: Comfort Food That Hugs You use a food processor. For the Broccoli Pesto and Cheddar Grilled Cheese Sandwich, combine broccoli florets, garlic, pine nuts, parsley, Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese, lemon zest and juice, salt, and olive oil. Next, spread the pesto on one side of the bread and place the cheddar cheese on top. Then cook.
How to make grilled cheese in an air fryer
Hall) learned a new trick during the pandemic shutdown. Air fryers can work miracles on grilled cheese.
She tried it out with a top-of-the-line creation called Taco Grilled Cheese. This includes prepared tacos with meat, sandwiches dipped in egg mixture, and tortillas pureed in a processor with chips. Sandwiches can be cooked in a skillet over medium heat. , but she suggests trying the air fryer.
“Put it on a rack, set it to 300 to 325 degrees, and it’ll be ready in about seven minutes, depending on your air fryer,” Hall says. “But what’s great about it is that it’s toasted all around. And because the heat is circulating, I love that the bread is crispy and everything is melted. …And the soup and… When eaten together, they make a great dunker.”
Of course, when I think of great recipes, celebrity chef Guy Fieri comes to mind. For a completely different type of grilled cheese, and you might as well try cooking it over a campfire, Guy Fieri has come up with the Sausage, Mac ‘n’ Cheese, and Grilled Cheese Camp Sandwich. These require some preparation, including cooking Italian sausage and macaroni and cheese made with shredded American cheese, cheddar, smoked Gouda, and provolone cheese.
Place a slice of King’s Hawaiian sweet bread in a sandwich toaster and add a slice of provolone, macaroni and cheese, sausage, and another slice of bread. Then cook over the fire or burner. (The recipe can also be made in an air fryer or, as Mashable senior editor Nicole Gallucci used when her Fieri coached on his Zoom, in a panini maker.)
“Classic grilled cheese is delicious, but sometimes even classics deserve a little extra attention,” Fieri said in a statement to USA TODAY. “My Grilled Cheese Camp Sandwich is definitely yours. We’re going to up our grilled cheese game.” Four pieces of melted cheese, sausage, and homemade macaroni and cheese browned in the Camp Chef Sandwich Press… now it’s time to take it to the next level!”
