The Greek Orthodox City of San Francisco Office of Youth and Young Adult Ministries will host a Lenten retreat at St. Nicholas Lunch and Retreat Center in Dunlap on the weekend of Friday, March 22, 2024 through Sunday, March 24, 2024. The event welcomed Orthodox young adults from all over the West Coast. , California. The event, attended by more than 40 young people from all Orthodox traditions, focused on the theme “Discovering our Spiritual Heritage – Ecumenical Patriarchate” and featured guest speaker San Francisco Metropolitan Congress Archbishop George Psefteas, member of the Archdiocesan Council, was the guest speaker. He serves on the Finance Committee and was recently appointed to the Archdiocese’s Youth and Young Adult Ministries Committee.
The retreat began Friday night with a greeting to the Theotokos at the Alex and Faye Spanos Faith and Heritage Center led by Father Manoli Aspiotis, associate priest of Holy Cross Greek Orthodox Church in Belmont, California. On Saturday, Consul George Psefteas gave an engaging presentation on “Discovering our spiritual heritage – the Ecumenical Patriarchate”. Archbishop Psefteas said: “Do you realize how little our faith has changed since the time of Christ? Do you know the contribution of Constantinople and its Patriarchate in the apostolic succession from the time of St. Andrew? We facilitated discussions with young people, focusing on questions such as “. “Called for the first time? How can each of us directly experience the beauty and holiness of Constantinople?” , it was a great opportunity to learn about the importance of maintaining strong ties with our home church and archdiocese.
On Saturday afternoon, young people took part in a work project in the olive groves of the Theotokos Monastery of the Life-giving Spring. On Saturday night, we enjoyed camaraderie in the Heritage Center’s fireside room while enjoying a talent show highlighting the many talents of the retreat participants. Sunday morning’s Divine Liturgy was the culmination of the retreat, followed by breakfast and the final gathering of the weekend.
