Diners looking for unique cuisine and creative food presentations will find it at Square Roots in Crown Point.
Located across from the historic Lake County Courthouse in Crown Point, Square Roots offers a convivial atmosphere, trendy décor with wooden tables and chairs, and an eclectic food and drink menu.
Square Roots, billed as a gastropub, is known for its “crafted dining experience,” according to its website.
On a recent visit to a gastropub, I found it to be an enjoyable culinary experience. We were seated in a booth in a prime location. The booth was easily visible, facing the imposing-looking courthouse in the distance.
Our waitress brought us menus and took our drink orders quickly.
We had drinks and perused the menu, which was filled with all kinds of dishes, from sandwiches and interesting-looking burgers to soups and salads and hearty entrees.

We decided on “Bubba Gump” in the Earth Bowl category and “BWG Bruschetta Chicken” in the dinner category.
Both portions were ample. The Bubba Gump was served over Jollof rice and was garnished with garlic shrimp, broccoli, crimini mushrooms and green pepper. Rice from West Africa was found to be hearty and flavorful.
The chicken bruschetta was also a winner. This dish consisted of two grilled chicken breasts served on garlic toast. It also came with mozzarella cheese, tomato, garlic broccoli and balsamic sauce. It was served with crushed red-skinned potatoes and was perfect for the recipe.
Our meal started with a fresh tasting mocktail called Cocomelon and Soup of the Moment, a creamy asparagus recipe.
Throughout the meal, we never felt rushed by our server and appreciated how attentive she was while ordering and asking various questions about the dishes on the menu.
There were a lot of delicious-looking items on the menu at Square Roots, so I’d definitely visit again.
The restaurant’s menu includes shareable items like Bang Bang Shrimp, Fireside Elote Dip, and Deep Roots Brisket Nachos, as well as Holy Grail Mac ‘n’ Cheese, Animal Burger, The Babe with house-made pulled pork, and tacos. The Texas Ranger and his three little pigs, desserts like mocha bundt cake and aprini waffini.
The restaurant also offers a gluten-free menu. We also have an extensive drinks, cocktail and whiskey menu. For small children, we offer a kids corner menu.
