The latest issue of The Way, a Christian spiritual magazine published by the Society of Jesus in the United Kingdom, pays tribute to Philip Endian SJ (1954-2023).
He was a true gentleman, a distinguished scholar, and his mind had the agility of an acrobat. Among his scholarly interests are Karl Rahner, St. Ignatius Loyola, early Jesuits, and Gerald Manley Hopkins, and the selection of articles reflects these diverse interests. His humble approach to his heritage is perhaps best expressed in the closing words of his doctoral thesis. “From its own perspective, our efforts are but fragments; mere attempts to clear space so that the grace of God may be revealed.” His agility of mind was the result of his extraordinary talent. It did not come solely from God, but from the inner workings of grace revealed through his life and work.
In the first article translated from Spanish, Philip Endean explores the role of the cross in the grace of St. Ignatius’ spiritual exercises. This article can be downloaded for free here. Wa also includes his lesser-known articles on devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the modern world. His fellow scholars contributed articles on Karl Rahner, Jesuit history, and Ignatian spirituality. Other contributions include Teresa White’s commentary on Syriac manuscripts translated into English, and Emily Abdeni-Holman’s fascinating exploration of the importance of imagination in developing a richer understanding of reality. reflects his literary interests.
