Humans love the sun, moon, and stars. In that sense, we are very simple creatures.
And for centuries, humans have shared the experience of looking up at the sky and occasionally seeing it darken in a phenomenon called a total solar eclipse.
It transcends time, transcends civilizations, and has been recorded in a variety of media. Before cameras, solar eclipses were photographed in oil paint or carved into cave walls.
And sometimes the images show what the Earth’s surface looks like: the convergence of the sun and moon. But more often than not, it is documented more abstractly, capturing the changes in experience, emotion, and energy that occur when light and darkness meet.
In April, Vermont will experience a total solar eclipse. For those who practice astrology and related spiritual traditions, it is an energetically powerful eclipse. The solar eclipse will occur in Aries. Aries is an astrological fire sign that corresponds to the period from March 21st to April 19th. It also happens at the new moon.
For these Vermonters, the eclipse represents a shift in energy not just at the moment of totality, but in the days and weeks that follow. They say there’s no one way to best experience a solar eclipse, but timing, reflection, and curiosity are key.
sun, moon, stars
Kelly Hunter has been reading birth charts for decades, ever since she was “snatched” by the astrology wave in the 60s and 70s. She now does it full time through her own business, HeliaStar, based in Calais.
She also works on astronomy, which combines classical astrology and mythology.
And solar eclipses have an interesting relationship with both.
This particular eclipse is occurring in Aries, an astrological sign that Hunter says is all about spontaneity, originality, and inventiveness.
And this particular solar eclipse also ties into Greek mythology in a way that gives it a unique element: Chiron. In mythology, Chiron was a half-man, half-horse centaur. In astrology, Chiron is a comet that occupies a sign in someone’s birth chart. Chiron is the “wounded healer” and is associated with the ability to overcome and deeply heal.
Chiron will be in Aries on April 8th, just like the solar eclipse. Mr. Hunter says that Chiron is about coordinating the spiritual with the mental, the emotional with the physical, and even the various selves, and it’s all about experiencing the “now”. And when combined with the fire of Aries, Hunter says the eclipse’s energetic reset feels even more refreshing.
“It’s hard to even conceptualize what our experience is like, because this is so out-of-the-box. It’s totally, potentially surprising. This is how our brains are wired. may be rewired.”

“This is so out-of-the-box that it’s hard to even conceptualize what our experience will be like,” Hunter says. “It’s really, potentially, amazing. This could rewire our brains. So we don’t know what’s going to happen that day. But it’s very unusual. . And there is also the possibility of crisis and healing.”
For people with Aries sun signs, this eclipse could be quite powerful because the reset coincides with their primary sign, Hunter said. For people who are 50 or 51 years old, it can be a big deal. According to Hunter, it takes Chiron 50 years to travel through all the constellations, so that age coincides with him completing his journey when he reenters Aries. .
Overall, Hunter says the eclipse is an opportunity for change.
“You don’t have to go back to what you used to do. Try something new and different,” says Hunter.
it’s all in the cards
Megan Gonzalez has been reading tarot cards for over 15 years. She currently offers readings, educational classes, and more through her business, Luminary Divination, including in-person sessions at Practical Magic in Essex Junction.
Gonzalez said eclipses are entry points for energy and often provide an epiphany, a lightbulb-like moment, that can help change direction. Solar eclipses also occur during new moons, which Gonzalez says represent new beginnings.
Gonzalez says tarot cards can be a way to explore and examine emotions during a time she says can bring both childlike giddyness and grounded energy. says.

Around the time of a solar eclipse, Gonzalez expects to see clients seeking help navigating the energy generated by the eclipse and looking for ways to maximize their energy.
“We can all get caught in our own shadows from time to time, so solar eclipses, especially powerful ones like this one, can illuminate our unconscious minds and help us understand who we are. It has the ability to help us realize the truths within ourselves that are hidden from our consciousness,” says Gonzalez.
Gonzalez said this total solar eclipse could bring about a heightened sense of intuition, along with Aries’ feelings of passion, motivation, and inspiration. She says it will affect each person going through it differently. For Gonzalez, tarot is a way to navigate his personal experience of this cosmic event.
But she says approaching the eclipse with an open mind and curiosity is the best option, even if it’s just a chance to experience an astronomical phenomenon with others.
“Life can be a lot cooler than we think. And often we get so narrow-minded and focused on the details that we miss the big picture. And like a solar eclipse, Just like energy shifts, when we are able to get out of our own ways, it’s like, “Wow, I was stuck in this loop and I didn’t even realize I had blinders on, and , now we can see the whole picture.”
crystal clear
Annette Gingras has been working with crystals for almost 20 years. As former owners of Spirit Dancer Crystals and Gifts and founders of the Vermont Reiki Institute in the greater Burlington area, they have helped many other Vermonters engage with crystal and energy work.
Gingras says it all comes back to intuition, even the energetic experience of a total solar eclipse.
“It’s a balance between the duality of shadow and light, and one literally obscuring the other so that you can actually see what’s going on inside yourself and bring what’s going on inside into the light.” It gives you an opportunity to bring it inside.’”

Gingras listed a menu of crystals that are said to interact well with the energy of this solar eclipse in Aries. Here’s what they pointed out:
- Selenite: This high-vibration angelic stone, which means “moonlight,” can help cleanse and cleanse your energetic body so that it feels safe to drop into your physical body, Gingras says.
- obsidian: Gingras says it’s a protective stone that acts like a vacuum, drawing negativity from your energy field into the stone.
- Moonstone: Gingras says this stone primarily works with intuition and feminine vibrations. It is associated with the third eye chakra point.
- Sunstone: According to Gingras, this stone has a wonderful duality with moonstone. It acts on the solar plexus and is associated with willpower, courage, and vitality.
- Carnelian: This deep red stone works on the sacrum and solar plexus, so it’s perfect for getting that spark of creativity, especially during the Aries eclipse, Gingras says.
- Hematite: On an energetic level, Gingras says, this stone helps bring in and bring higher energies into the body from where dreams and wishes live.
But in reality, Gingras says, there’s no right or wrong way to choose or use a crystal; it’s all about intuition, faith, and the right timing.
“If you didn’t believe that these particular crystals, these particular energies, were working, even on a subconscious level, they wouldn’t work,” they say.
Solar power
Ashley Meagher works with spirit guides and energy frequencies and shares her readings from her home in Brownsville to her more than 144,000 followers on TikTok, who know her best as Ashlight Star.
Meagher says he thinks of the sun as a ball of energy, but sometimes that energy is released in solar flares or solar frequencies. Meagher said the energy emitted by the sun, called light cords, can have a spiritual impact on someone by activating gifts within them or bringing messages from spirit guides. states.
Meagher says the sun is like a portal, allowing people to tap into this energy. And on the day of the solar eclipse, that portal coincides with darkness. Meagher said the sun’s alignment with the moon releases stagnant energy and can bring strong emotions to those who witness it.
And because the effects of a solar eclipse are not immediate, they take time, and no two journeys will be exactly the same for everyone, Meagher said.
“When it comes to eclipses, it’s about matching moments of darkness with light and keeping that balance and making people feel like, ‘Okay, darkness can feel just as good as light.’ … A lot of people will feel empowered by it.”
Ashley Meagher, energy healer and psychic channeler
The concept of darkness overshadowing light is not always a pleasant one. Meagher says darkness can be scary, but her spirit guides have taught her that darkness can be empowering and healing.
“When it comes to eclipses, it’s about matching moments of darkness with light and keeping that balance and making people feel like, ‘Okay, darkness can feel just as good as light.’ … A lot of people will feel empowered by it,” Meagher said.
The solar eclipse will have an impact. Meagher says society needs it.
“For some people, it might feel a little too much,” Meagher says. “But I think it’s natural to feel that way.”
