SUNY Oswego recently announced a new online master’s program in Health Promotion and Behavioral Wellness. It responds to the growing need for skilled health promotion and wellness professionals and offers a comprehensive curriculum that prepares students for influential roles in this dynamic field.

As organizations increasingly recognize the importance of supporting the overall health of their employees, the need for professionals skilled in behavioral health and health promotion is rapidly increasing. State University of New York Oswego’s online master’s program in Health Promotion and Behavioral Health meets the growing demand to train professionals skilled in preventative lifestyle and behavior change, ensuring graduates have a significant impact on public health and wellness. I will make it possible.

“The launch of the online master’s program in Health Promotion and Behavioral Health is an important milestone for SUNY Oswego,” said Kristen Eichhorn, SUNY Oswego Dean of Graduate Studies.

“This exciting new program focuses on designing and evaluating interventions that help motivate and educate individuals to live healthy lives,” Eichhorn said. ”

career preparation

Michael-Daniel Vodzogbe, one of the program’s first students, is excited to prepare for a career with the university’s online master’s degree in health promotion and behavioral health.

“Health care has been part of my lifestyle for as long as I can remember,” Vodzogbe says. “My mom and dad raised me to be health-first. My mom practices a lot in terms of nutrition, and my dad was an athlete just like me. So that combined with health and wellness. I became more interested in research.”

Vodzogbe, a Lakers student-athlete and multiple school honoree, graduated from Oswego with a bachelor’s degree in wellness management and continued her educational journey in preparation for a future career as a coach. He said he wants to become a youth health and exercise coach. He plans to apply what he learned in his program to his profession and inspire young people to “find better ways to manage stress and health.”

“My favorite course is HSC 510: Mind-Body Wellness with Professor Amy Bidwell. This class focuses on the stress response,” Vodzogbe said. “I think this is interesting because stress is a big concern among youth and young adults. So by learning how the internal mechanisms work, we can smile even in the face of adversity. You’ll be able to practice the techniques and behaviors that make you feel comfortable while sharing these valuable tools with others.”

Career prospects in health promotion

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for health promotion professionals is expected to increase from 7% to 15% by 2032, depending on the specific field.

“Due to a nationwide shortage of health care workers, there is an increased demand for non-medical health care workers. Bridging the gap between people’s health needs and health care. ” Nadja Zayed, assistant professor and graduate coordinator in the Department of Health Promotion and Wellness, said:

“Health promotion and behavioral health professionals can play a vital role in employment fields such as healthcare by leading initiatives that can improve individuals’ health behaviors and overall well-being.” Zayed he said.

Graduates complete the 30 credit hour online program in 12 to 18 months. The 18-credit core curriculum focuses on evidence-based behavior change theory and strategies, program planning and implementation, and evaluation methods to build a solid foundation for overall well-being. These core courses are complemented by electives, allowing students to build an educational path customized to their specific interests and career goals.

Graduates of the program are well-positioned to take on roles such as:

  • local health professionals
  • Advocate for health promotion and wellness
  • Health Promotion and Wellness Director
  • Health Promotion and Wellness Program Manager
  • Health promotion/wellness specialist
  • HR Wellness Specialist
  • wellness consultant
  • wellness entrepreneur

Additionally, graduates are expected to adapt and integrate technology into program planning, evaluation, and lifestyle behavioral changes, and emerge as culturally proficient leaders uniquely qualified in their current or future job fields. I am.
