Butler University proudly announces the name change of the Center for Faith and Vocation (CFV) to: Compass Center – Multifaith communities, interfaith engagement, meaning and purpose, and spiritual life. This change reflects more than 20 years of dedication to promoting inclusion, diversity, and personal growth within and beyond the university community.
The Compass Center stands on four pillars that guide students, faculty, staff, and the larger community toward a comprehensive understanding of spiritual life and personal fulfillment.
- multi-religious community: Celebrate and support Butler’s diverse faith and secular community.
- interfaith engagement: Fostering collaboration, appreciation, and learning across differences.
- meaning and purpose: Create a space to explore your values, decisions, and life’s big questions.
- spiritual life: Provide spiritual care and wellness practices to students, faculty, and staff.
“Compass Center’s new name signifies a deepening of our commitment to inclusivity, recognizing the diverse journeys of faith, meaning, and spiritual growth in our community,” said Black Christian Fellowship President and Interfaith Councilor said Raegan Jefferson ’25, an alumnus of the association. “This name change not only more closely aligns with our mission, but also celebrates individual paths of discovery and connection.”
Under the stewardship of the Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the Compass Center will strengthen its contribution to Butler University’s commitment to fostering an intentionally diverse, inclusive, and equitable community. They play a vital role in education, accommodate religious practice and observance, and take care of academic, dietary, scheduling, and other needs.
said Dr. Khalilah Shabazz, Vice President and Chief Diversity Officer. This new name encapsulates the center’s mission and paves the way for even greater impact within our community. ”
The name change process was a collaborative effort involving Bridge Builder Strategies and various focus groups to more accurately fulfill the center’s mission of supporting diverse religious and secular identities and encouraging the search for a meaningful life. It emphasizes the need for reflective language.
“What we discovered in this process is that CFV explores so many different kinds of influences that it’s very difficult to capture them all in one title,” Compass Center said Daniel Myers, director of . “But a lot of our work is about helping people find things, like finding connections, finding meaning, finding direction. The idea of a place to look and find… It’s a central contribution to the campus, and I think the Compass Center captures that.”That’s it. ”
The Compass Center will continue to promote the religious and secular diversity that CFV began more than 20 years ago, while maintaining the same dedicated staff, community advisors, and connections to campus that it has always had. We continue the tradition of exploring life’s big questions. This rebrand reaffirms the center’s commitment to fostering a space where all members of the Butler community can explore spirituality, purpose, and meaning.
“Compass Center’s new name opens the door to understanding and engaging with the myriad resources available for spiritual support, purpose discovery, and faith guidance,” said former CFV and host of the Center’s Compass Conversations podcast. Communications intern Alison Mikkolis, 24, recalled: change. “This is a testament to our inclusiveness and dedication to meeting the needs of every individual.”
