SEARSPORT — The Parsonage Gallery and Anodyne Book Shop will host an author talk and book signing with Benjamin Perry and Dr. Aaron Rosen. The free event “Seeing through Tears” will be held on Saturday, April 6th from 4-5 p.m. at the Parsonage Gallery, 8 Elm Street, Searsport.
Perry talks about his recent publications Cry, Baby: Why Our Tears Matter (Broadleaf, 2023), Rosen talks about his recent book What did Jesus see? (Broadleaf, 2023).
Perry’s book explores the relationship between crying and transformation, and the social forces that prevent full emotional expression. Rosen examines Jesus as a visual thinker, considering how Jesus encourages us to see the world with radical empathy.
Together, Perry and Rosen reveal how Jesus’ tears revealed how Jesus saw those around him, and how tears, while temporarily obscuring humanity’s own vision, can make them more clear. I’m going to find out.
About the author
Dr. Aaron Rosen is the executive director of Clemente Courses in the Humanities, a national nonprofit organization that provides innovative, free college courses to underserved communities. He is also a visiting professor at King’s College London, where he previously taught. He received his PhD from Cambridge University and then began his career as a fellow at Yale, Oxford, and Columbia Universities. Rosen has curated dozens of exhibitions and is the founding director of the Maine nonprofit Parsonage Gallery. He is the author or editor of 12 of his books.
