NEW DELHI: A new survey has revealed that 73% Indians prefer to read the ingredients list and nutritional value before buying snacks, highlighting the growing trend towards healthy snacks among the nation.
The Healthy Snacks Report 2024, released on Sunday, surveyed over 6,000 people across India to explore changing consumption trends. According to the report, 93% of respondents expressed a desire to shift towards healthier options, highlighting the correlation between reading labels and making conscious choices, as well as promoting transparency.
The report comes amid growing concerns over the fraudulent adulteration of food items such as spices, confectionery and other everyday consumer goods, which has sparked a wave of conscious consumption, with shoppers keen to check food packaging for potentially harmful substances.
Nine in 10 respondents are looking for healthier alternatives to traditional snacks, with around 60% of Indians opting for natural, additive-free products with healthy ingredients such as nuts, seeds and whole grains.
Makkhana (fox nuts) and dry fruits are rising in popularity in the healthy snack category with 67% of Indians opting for these nutritious options. The report states, “A true testament to the growing popularity of makkhana in India, 59% of millennials call it a trustworthy snack, followed by Gen Z (49%) and Gen X (47%), indicating its popularity among people of all age groups. Further, over 70% revealed that their favourite time to have a snack is in the evening while having tea or coffee.”
But the shift to healthier snacks comes at a cost, with over 58% of those surveyed citing “high retail price” as a barrier to switching.
The consumer insights survey was conducted by snack brand Farmly and provided valuable data on the preferences of Indian consumers and the barriers they face when it comes to healthier snacking options.
