Start
- Find a quiet place where you can sit up straight and comfortably, such as the edge of your bed, the floor, or a chair.
- Close your eyes and focus on your breathing or another focal point to be fully present.
- Relax your body by loosening your shoulders, loosening your jaw, and softening your eyebrows.
Mindful meditation to help you let go of attachments
Most emotions only last about 90 seconds, but we typically sustain them through a series of thoughts. When we have an argument with a friend, we may feel angry at that moment. When we looked back on it later that night, we wondered what had been said, why they had to bring up the past, how did we react, and what should we have done instead? You may start to ruminate on it. This idea snowballs and fuels our anger even further.
In this meditation, we will experiment with experiencing emotions without getting caught up in the drama of the surrounding story. And this is not the same as denying or suppressing them, we just practice not going after them. Notice how it feels to release emotional energy and let it go.
