As long as we are alive, breathing is one of our only true homeostasis. Unless we pay attention to it, we hardly notice that we breathe in and out in our lives. It’s not easy for our minds, given how immersed we are in the present moment.
Just as an anchor holds down a ship, our breath can also act as an anchor, stabilizing our attention in the here and now. Silently saying the word “inhale” each time you breathe in will help you keep your attention on your inhale, and each time you breathe out, say “exhale” out loud to focus your attention on how it feels as you exhale. may be effective. Discover how to use your breathing anchor as a point of concentration using this meditation.
