It’s no secret that when you reach your glorious 50s, your skin changes rapidly. By this time, many women have reached perimenopause or menopause, which results in their previously glowing skin feeling dull, thin, and dry. That said, there are so many anti-aging products on the market that it can be difficult to decipher which ones are worth buying. As I near the age of 50, I wanted to find an anti-aging product that was worth the (sometimes hefty) price tag, so I turned to Dr. Philip Solomon of Solomon Facial Plastics in Toronto.

”[The] “The more obvious signs of aging really appeared in the early ’50s,” Solomon said. yahoo canada. “Years of exposure to the sun is becoming more apparent.”

“Menopause can affect skin health,” he says. “Currently, lack of collagen production is having a negative impact on skin quality, resulting in fine lines and wrinkles, thinning of the skin, and sagging skin.”

To combat the signs of aging and keep skin firm, bright and plump for longer, Solomon recommends people over 50 incorporate these five products into their daily skin care routine.

Top of Solomon’s list is a vitamin C serum. “This product is very important in fighting off environmental free radicals that damage the skin,” he said.

To use, apply vitamin C serum to freshly washed skin, followed by moisturizer and SPF. This “Amazon’s Choice” his ANA Vitamin C Serum is a great option because it contains hyaluronic acid for hydration. Just a few drops a day keeps free radicals away.

For travel and convenience. Neutrogena Vitamin C Serum Capsules is also a great option. These 20 percent vitamin C capsules are unscented and each little bead is the perfect amount, so don’t use too much.

Topical retinol has been a big part of my life since I struggled with cystic acne well into my 20s. Solomon emphasizes the importance of this ingredient as we age. Retinol, which is actually a type of vitamin A, has a huge impact on improving skin texture and reducing fine lines.

“These products are important for skin regeneration and cell turnover,” Solomon said. yahoo canada. When using retinol, it’s important to apply sunscreen thoroughly by hand, as your skin becomes more sensitive to the sun.

CeraVe Skin Renewing Cream Serum It contains ceramides and hyaluronic acid to give your skin an extra boost of hydration and help prevent skin dryness, a well-known side effect of retinol.

You might want to take it in during the winter Cerave Resurfacing Retinol Serum For your skin routine. It’s a little more powerful and is better to use when you spend more time indoors or out of the sun.

SSolomon said sunscreen is one product you should never avoid. “When it comes to protecting your skin from UV damage, there’s no better line of defense than a sunscreen with an SPF (sun protection factor) of at least 40,” he said.

A few years ago, I had a skin cancer scare, and ever since then, I’ve become more careful about sunscreen. Even if you forget your sunscreen on a trip to the Caribbean in your 20s, you’ll start developing sunspots and skin cancer in your 40s and 50s.

I’m addicted to this Aveeno sunscreen Ever since my mother gave it to me as a present. It’s lightweight, highly moisturizing, and absorbs well into my fair skin. Cetaphil Daily Facial Moisturizer SPF 50 Another great option for acne-prone skin.

To be honest, when Solomon added growth factor serum to the list, I had no idea what he was talking about.

Young skin is rich in proteins called growth factors that help skin regenerate. As we age, growth factors decrease, leading to fine lines and thinning of the skin. Growth factors come from plants or animals, and adding growth factor serum to your daily routine can slow down the aging process.

The last product on Solomon’s list of products, trapped on a desert island and only allowed to take five things, is an exfoliating polish. Solomon said exfoliating polish can help enhance the effectiveness of all your other products, but be careful not to overdo it.
