The first Friday in May is School Lunch Hero Day. On this day, school nutrition teams are recognized for the hard work they do to keep children happy and fed. Here we will introduce some of the celebration events held across the country.
1. Holding a contest
Dallas Independent School District (Dallas ISD) is celebrating School Lunch Hero Day with a little friendly competition. Over the past few weeks, students have been able to vote for their favorite school cafeteria team, and the winning team will be recognized by the district.
In addition, Dallas ISD also provided coloring pages and thank you letter templates that students can use to thank school nutrition staff.
2. Special Swag
Chartwells K12 is awarding 16,000 chefs, nutritionists and food service workers with special edition ‘School Lunch Heroes Are the Best’ T-shirts. In addition, each of Chartwells’ K-12 schools hosts their own celebrations to recognize their teams.
3. Video shoutout
The Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) is honoring school food heroes across the state by creating a video series in which K-12 operators give viewers tours of their kitchens and introduce themselves to their teams. The video is posted on social media for everyone to watch and enjoy.
4. Send a thank you card
The San Francisco Unified School District is celebrating the success of its nutrition team and encouraging people in the district to send letters of appreciation to the nutrition staff. The website also includes links to coloring pages for students who would like to color pictures of their favorite school lunch heroes.
