3 ways to spot a ‘serious’ vitamin deficiency that might be worrying you

Vitamin B12 deficiency poses greater risks to long-term health than others and can cause harmful, sometimes permanent symptoms such as mental disorders, infertility and neurological damage.

Lack of proper nutrients and vitamins in the body can have adverse health effects, but one vitamin deficiency poses a bigger threat than other vitamin deficiencies. Vitamin B12 deficiency can cause adverse, sometimes permanent, symptoms, including mental disorders, infertility, and neurological damage.

Although less well known than other vitamins, Vitamin B12 is essential for key bodily functions such as metabolism, the nervous system, and the circulatory system. A lack of Vitamin B12 in the body can lead to serious problems such as chronic fatigue, paranoia, and delusions.

The deficiency can be caused by various forms of anaemia, or a vegan or plant-based diet, and NHS England says it is “crucial” to recognise the early warning signs of this deficiency as it can cause permanent and “irreversible” damage if left untreated.

Most deficiencies occur when an underlying condition prevents the stomach from properly processing vitamin B12. For example, various types of anemia impair the ability to absorb vitamin B12, and in some cases vitamin B9 as well. In rare cases, people who do not eat foods rich in vitamin B12, such as fish and eggs, may develop symptoms. However, this can be avoided with a multivitamin.

Unlike other vitamin deficiencies, a deficiency of Vitamin B12 often leads to sudden or gradual changes in mental state and personality, sometimes resulting in severe symptoms such as paranoia that require immediate medical treatment. Research has shown that these neurological symptoms are more prevalent in older adults, but can affect people of all ages.

3 Early Warning Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Inability to think straight and experiencing an imaginary burning sensation are some of the signs of vitamin B12 deficiency.(Getty)

There are many physical symptoms associated with B12 deficiency, but research shows that the most common symptoms that lead to doctor visits are neurological and psychiatric symptoms. These are not physically visible symptoms, but are caused by the brain as the brain and nervous system begin to lose function.

One of the most common neurological symptoms is paresthesia, which is a burning, stinging, or itching sensation in different parts of the body. This is a tingling sensation that is usually caused by a blood flow problem, but in this case, it is a sign of pressure on the nervous system.

People who are deficient in this vitamin may also experience ataxia, a decline in fine motor skills and speech. Patients may notice this when writing, trying to keep their balance, or when their speech begins to become slurred. If not mistaken for another illness, this can be a key indicator that the body is not processing vitamin B12 effectively.

The most alarming symptom of this deficiency is what scientists call “delirium,” which refers to the decline in higher cognitive function as vital brain processes shut down without essential vitamin B12.

Delirium can manifest as delusions of persecution, confused thought patterns, and auditory and visual hallucinations. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms it is important to speak to your doctor. Although these conditions are serious, if caught early they can potentially be cured with a simple injection.

Other Signs of Vitamin B12 Deficiency

Whatever the cause of B12 deficiency, many of the symptoms are the same. However, because the warning signs of B12 deficiency are varied and come on gradually, they can easily be ignored or confused with other conditions.

The NHS lists common symptoms of this nutrient deficiency as:

  • Breathing quickly or shortness of breath
  • headache
  • Indigestion
  • Loss of appetite
  • Palpitations
  • Vision problems
  • Feeling weak or tired
  • diarrhea
  • Sore and red tongue, sometimes accompanied by mouth ulcers
  • Problems with memory, comprehension, and judgment

If you’re worried you might have a B12 deficiency, talk to your doctor and get a blood test. In most cases, there’s an underlying problem that means your body can’t process B12, so treatment usually involves a series of B12 injections administered by your doctor.
