About dsm-firmenich Animal nutrition and health
At dsm-firmenich, we know that as the world’s population grows, the demand for animal protein will continue to increase. To meet this demand within the planet’s boundaries, our Animal Health and Nutrition business unit is transitioning the produce industry to a more sustainable livestock future.
By 2050, 10 billion people are expected to share the planet. To feed them responsibly in a healthy, sustainable way, now is the time to make a change.
Through scientific innovation and collaborative partnerships with our customers, we are pioneering sustainable livestock practices that respect animals, people and the planet, and meet demand while respecting the capabilities of farming communities.
We have worked meticulously towards achieving more sustainable livestock farming, overcoming several challenges.
One of the key challenges was establishing rigorous science-based targets (SBTi) requirements for reporting and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. In 2019, DSM targeted a 30% reduction in total direct emissions (Scope 1 and 2) by 2030 from 2016 levels. This target has been revised upward several times to reach a 59% reduction by 2030. In 2023, the two companies merged to form dsm-firmenich. . We are currently working on a new sustainability strategy that will take us higher, farther, faster.
Another key challenge was how to effectively measure the environmental impact of agricultural operations in a way that is reliable in the eyes of various stakeholders and economically attractive to the agri-food industry. That’s why we created Sustell™.
Sustell™ provides food value chains with a trusted, science-based approach that uses primary farm and feed data to measure the environmental footprint of livestock and chart a path to a greener future. The leading LCA software platform.
Armed with clear data and scientifically-validated results, we have driven a fundamental shift in mindset across the industry. Rather than fearing judgement, producers recognize that it is essential to make it through the ‘race to the top’ with sustainability credentials, driven primarily by burgeoning consumer demand. I accepted this challenge. Our Sustell™ platform has significantly reduced the environmental footprint of farms and enabled data-driven decision-making to improve productivity, farm profits, and sustainability.
Another big challenge is methane, a short-lived but potent greenhouse gas. Cow burp accounts for about 40% of the world’s methane emissions. We have developed Bovaer®, a revolutionary methane-reducing feed supplement that reduces intestinal methane emissions in cows and improves the sustainability of meat and dairy products. On average, emissions are reduced by 30% from dairy cows and 45% from beef cows.
So far, Bovaer® has recorded a methane emission reduction of 8,792 tons of CO2e. This equates to approximately 1,800 cars being taken off the road each year. These emissions reductions will increase significantly in the future as Bovaer® adoption increases.
dsm-firmenich Animal nutrition and health outcomes go far beyond statistical numbers. Unlike other sustainability initiatives, we have been able to create an ecosystem where profitability and sustainability coexist and influence each other. Awareness and technological feasibility barriers have changed, substantial progress has been made in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and an era of sustainable development of the animal protein industry has arrived.
